Dr. Grealish and his staff at Eye Health encourage you to take the time to research the LASIK center and physician you are considering for your surgery. The following points will help you make a well educated choice.

  1. Find a doctor by getting referrals from other doctors or from patients who have had laser vision correction. Dr Grealish has performed laser vision surgery on numerous doctors and nurses in our community. His LASIK patients are delighted to talk about their experiences and how improved vision has changed their lives. We'd be happy to put you touch with several of them who had similar prescriptions to your own.

  2. Beware of any doctor who promises 20/20 vision. Expect to see very well after LASIK, but don’t expect to see perfectly. Each patient gets a slightly different result. The best surgeon in the world can’t guarantee 20/20 vision. As with any surgery, results are as individual as each patient. Dr.Grealish is committed to you and your vision needs long after your vision correction procedure is completed. He will only perform surgery on those patients who are good candidates for the surgery.

  3. Choose a doctor who is a specialist in vision correction surgery. Experience counts. Dr. Grealish has specialized in laser vision correction since 1998, performing hundreds of surgeries a year. Dr. Grealish has lectured at the Casey Eye Institute regarding laser vision correction and his outcomes. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the International Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is board certified in Ophthalmic Surgery. He has performed many thousands of eye surgeries since beginning his specialty training at the Casey Eye Institute in 1993.

  4. Don’t be fooled by advertisements about a particular laser center. Check the facts and then choose based on the doctor and their commitment to your care. Dr. Grealish will not only perform your procedure, but will be there for you during all of your evaluations before and after surgery. Dr. Grealish is dedicated to your care. He and his staff work to ensure personal, quality care for each of our patients and will commit the time to answer all of your questions.

  5. Ask what measures are taken to ensure quality control and prevent infection. Look for a center using sterile technique and a specialized dust-free operating room. Ask if they conform to the “Recommended Practices for Laser Refractive Surgery” outlined by the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses. At Eye Health Northwest Laser Center, you can count on a seasoned, tightly knit surgical team who has your best care as their entire objective. The staff is dedicated to ensuring the laser and all of its components are running at the highest standards including tightly regulating the humidity and temperature of the laser room. They run a safety and accuracy test on all laser equipment before each surgery and even between each eye. Our doctors replace disposable equipment before each surgery and between each individual eye as well. It is costly to meet these high standards, yet we believe it is essential for optimal safety.

  6. Ask for information on your doctor’s outcomes and complication rates during surgery as well as the rate of enhancements (need for a touch-up after the initial surgery). Dr. Grealish has been using sophisticated outcome analysis software since 1999 to constantly monitor and improve results. For most patients, the chances of achieving 20/20 are about 95% with Custom WaveFront LASIK. For Dr. Grealish, the rate of complication during surgery is about 1 in 1,000. His enhancement rate for the last two years is 2-3%. Dr. Grealish will discuss the expectations specific to your eyes during your consultation.

  7. If you feel like you’re getting a hard sell, you probably are. Go elsewhere. You’re not buying a car - this is real surgery. Dr. Grealish declines about 10% of the patients who come to him to have laser vision correction. At Eye Health Northwest, we view laser vision correction as a valuable service in addition to our full service optical shops and specialty contact lens clinics. We have built a “state of the art” laser center with a dedicated staff to provide this service at the highest level possible. We are not a “surgical mill”. As long standing members of your community, the long term health of your eyes is our first priority.

  8. Beware of advertisements pushing “low cost” surgery. Discount surgery is as good as a discount parachute. The potential savings are not worth the risk of receiving less than expert care!

  9. Laser vision correction is a team effort. Pick a good one. Dr. Grealish has worked hard to assemble a team of the best. His laser vision coordinator, technicians, and surgical staff have all received specialized training and have worked together for years. They are dedicated to your needs throughout your experience. Our goal is to treat you as part of our family from answering your initial questions about surgery and financing to scheduling your appointments, being there during your surgery, and congratulating you on your new vision afterward. We particularly enjoy seeing our patients over the years following their surgery and sharing their excitement over their new vision.

  10. While you investigate, don’t lose sight of the benefits: for most people a lifetime of bad vision can be cured in minutes. Since 1991, LASIK surgery has improved the eyesight of millions of people around the world. See what it can do for you.
