LASIK
Cataract

One of the most gratifying aspects of both LASIK and Cataract surgery is the amazing improvement in vision that most patients can recognize even the first day after surgery. As a surgeon with a background in Physics, I have been drawn to this area of medicine in part because of our precise ability to directly measure our success with surgery. Results can be measured and expressed in many different ways ranging from our computerized imaging devices that directly measure the optics of your eye, to the old standby “20/20” which indicates you have normal vision compared to the “average” human.

No matter how LASIK and Cataract surgery results are measured, I think the most important information patient’s need to know is that they can indeed be measured and explained by your surgeon. Accurately tracking results in a database is time consuming. Therefore only a small subset of eye surgeons use the available online outcomes software that I use. I think the time investment pays off in the ability to refine results and better communicate expectations to my patients. I’ve been tracking my LASIK results since 1998 when I began performing that surgery. I’ve been tracking my Cataract/Deluxe Lens Implant results since their FDA approval in 2005.

Current web-based technology allows me to compare my results to hundreds of other experienced surgeons. In addition, I can compare the results of various lasers, lens implants, and new surgical techniques even before I use them in my practice. It’s a great tool for surgeons like myself who philosophically want to stay on the leading edge of technology, but also want to be conservative in practice and only use tools and techniques that have already demonstrated good results. I’ve included some screen snapshots with some of my LASIK and Cataract/Deluxe Lens Implant results to give patients an idea of the current state of the art in measuring surgical results.
